When we first arrived at Mafambisa on Monday we were really pleased to see that work had begun on the new toilet block! You will remember back in February, Nick Gurney and Neptune Cubs organized a sponsored loo push to raise funds to build a new toilet block at Mafambisa.
Toilets in africa are constructed by digging a very large hole in the ground and lining it out with walls! “Joists” actually roofing poles are layer across the top of the walls and these are then covered with corrugated iron roofing sheets. The actual toilets are now installed into place above holes cut in the corrugated sheet. Next concrete is hand mixed and put on top of the roofing sheets, reinforced with wire, to form a concrete flooring slab.
The hole had already been dug and the underground walls were built before we arrived. We helped mix the concrete and by the end of Monday afternoon the toilets had been built up to ground level! Next job will be to build the cubicals on top!
We hope this will be done next week! Thank you to Neptune Cubs, who raised the money to allow this important development to happen!
